Gully vs Gaza?
The violent overtones of the Gully- Gaza feud between Vybez Kartel and Mavado seem to have infiltrated our society at a rapid rate and have had the effect of polarizing our young people and their communities. The measuring stick for being "trendy" now seems to be who is a "gangsta for life" and can "Keep it Gully" or rather, who is "the last man standing" and is up "Pon Di Gaza".
While Vybez Kartel and Movado appear to be more focused on winning a Gully-Gaza feud, our communities are the ones that are coming out on the losing end. Too many of our young people are holding grudges against each other for something that is of no relevance to them and is alien to our culture and values.
We have to do some introspection. We cannot and must not hold out our hope for our youth. Why are our young people allowing this music to dictate the lives that they live? Have we been sending the right messages to our youth to counter and trump the violent overtones of Kartel and Movado? Have we sufficiently and adequately promoted our own culture amongst our young people so as to make it appealing to them and give them something to identify with? If not, what are our options to remedy our failures in this regard? What can we do from other ends, to prevent this misplaced lyrical warfare from further eating at our communities like a cancer? Is there anything that we can do to prevent social plagues such as this petty and petulant rivalry from so deeply pervading our society in the future? Help us to help our young people!
